Post Completion Assistant is a terrific first role for someone like me

A blog by Adam Hazell, Post Completion Assistant

Adam Hazell, one of Oliver & Co’s youngest team members, works in our Conveyancing team as a Post Completion Assistant. Here he shares his thoughts about his experience of starting his career at Oliver & Co.

I joined Oliver & Co Solicitors in August 2022 in the Post Completion section of the Conveyancing Department, and I am currently doing a Paralegal Apprenticeship with the aim of qualify as a Paralegal in November 2024.

After completing my A Levels in June 2022, I was still unsure about what my next steps would be, as I wasn’t sure if University was the right option for me. I was considering a career in law, so I thought the best way forward was to get some work experience.

I came to Oliver & Co for a week’s work experience where I shadowed in the Post Completion team in the Conveyancing Department. I came to the firm feeling nervous about not understanding things and worried about making mistakes and left after that week feeling confident in what I had been taught. Everyone in the firm was happy to answer questions and support me in any way that they could. Once my work experience had ended, I had a meeting with a director at the firm and I was offered a job as a Post Completion Assistant! I was ecstatic when I was given the opportunity to work at Oliver & Co as I knew very quickly I would have a long enjoyable future here.

Post Completion is a terrific first role for someone like me with no previous legal knowledge or experience. The amount you can learn within this role is endless. I have learnt the fundamentals of Conveyancing and the number of different things I get to deal with in this position has provided me with really great experience. Once a conveyancing transaction has completed as a Post Completion Assistant, I deal with the registration formalities at the Land Registry and any other administrative requirements. I belong to a very supportive team who, even now, are more than happy to help. I really enjoy my working life and I thoroughly enjoy coming into work. I have been so privileged for my first place of work to have been Oliver & Co.

Oliver & Co are also supporting me with my Level 3 Paralegal Apprenticeship which I hope to complete in November 2024. Currently I have one day off a week. I still come into the office on that day, but I complete tasks set by the apprenticeship company, I do my own research, complete training and CPD and I shadow a conveyancing assistant to learn more about the conveyancing process as a whole. Since I joined the team here, we have become 100% employee owned. The future is definitely looking bright at Oliver & Co!
