What happens during the process?

Dissolving a civil partnership is a similar process to divorce. During the process, you will be able to resolve any financial issues. This includes financial issues about your property and pensions. We will negotiate to ensure that you receive the settlement that you are entitled to, and that meets your needs.

If you have any children, we can advise you on your rights and help you agree to arrangements that minimises any stress or disruption to them. For example, where they will live or go to school following your separation.

At the end of the process you will receive a final order which dissolves the civil partnership. You will also be given a final financial settlement, which will provide you with greater security for your future.

Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 legalises same-sex marriage and came into effect in March 2014.

If a same-sex relationship breaks down, couples must go through the divorce process.
