From Classroom to Career: Isabel’s Work Experience with Oliver & Co

At Oliver & Co, we are very proud of our work experience programme, which has been further developed and enhanced this year to give students a deeper and more practical insight into the legal profession.

Meaningful Placements

Each placement is carefully structured to ensure that participants gain a meaningful and worthwhile experience, which is why we are only able to offer a small number of opportunities each year. By keeping our programme focused, we can provide tailored support, hands-on learning, and genuine involvement in the day-to-day work of our teams.

We hope you enjoy reading about Isabel’s experience with us and seeing how our commitment to nurturing future talent is brought to life.

Isabel’s Experience

My name is Isabel, and I completed my work experience at Oliver & Co Solicitors in July 2025. I have just finished my first year at university, where I study Law and Criminology.

During my time at Oliver & Co, I had the opportunity to spend time with a variety of departments, including Industrial Disease, Personal Injury, Family Law, and Conveyancing. This gave me valuable insight into different areas of legal practice and how each one operates.

Each day, I had one-to-one meetings with staff members from different departments. These sessions were incredibly helpful, as they allowed me to learn in depth about their areas of expertise and the day-to-day realities of working in law. I also had the chance to shadow solicitors, particularly within the Personal Injury department. One of the highlights of my experience was listening in on a client call, which gave me a real-life example of how solicitors communicate with clients and manage cases.

I was also given handouts that explained the different routes into law, which I found extremely beneficial. They helped me better understand the various career options available and the qualifications needed to pursue them.

Reflecting on my time at Oliver & Co, I not only gained a greater understanding of the legal profession, but also improved my communication and teamwork skills through my interactions with various team members. Everyone I met was extremely welcoming, and I felt comfortable and supported from the moment I arrived.

If I had to choose a standout moment, it would be shadowing the solicitor during the client call. This experience provided me with a clear and engaging insight into the practical side of being a solicitor and reinforced my ambition to pursue a legal career.
