RSI – What Is It and How Is It Caused?

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is an umbrella term for pain in the muscles, nerves, and tendons caused by repetitive movement and overuse. It typically affects the upper body, including the hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, and neck.

At Oliver & Co Solicitors, we handle work-related repetitive strain injury claims. The aim of all our compensation claims is to place the injured worker back in the position they would have been in had the accident or injury not occurred.

Common Symptoms of RSI

Symptoms of repetitive strain injuries vary depending on the individual and the part of the body affected. These may include:

  • Sensation: Pain (such as aching, burning, or throbbing), tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation in the affected area.
  • Physical symptoms: Stiffness, weakness, muscle cramps, and occasionally swelling.
  • Progression: Without appropriate intervention, symptoms can become constant and may lead to a loss of strength or coordination, along with other complications.

Primary Causes & Risk Factors

Repetitive strain injuries occur when repeated actions cause microscopic damage to soft tissues faster than the body can repair them. Risk factors include:

  • Poor workstation setup (such as a screen positioned at the wrong height or an unsupportive chair)
  • Maintaining awkward postures
  • Using vibrating power tools
  • Repeatedly lifting heavy objects with little or no adequate breaks

If you require assistance with a work-related repetitive strain injury claim that was not your fault, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation. You generally have three years from the “date of knowledge” to bring a claim.

This means the date when you first became aware (or reasonably should have become aware) that:

  • you have an RSI injury; and
  • the injury was likely caused by your work.

This is why it is important to seek legal advice as soon as you suspect your repetitive strain injury may be work-related.
