What is pleural thickening?
Pleural thickening is a condition that affects the lining of the lungs (the pleura). Over time, this lining becomes scarred and thickened, making it more difficult for the lungs to expand fully. The severity of the condition varies, with symptoms ranging from mild breathlessness to significant breathing difficulties that can affect everyday life.
What causes pleural thickening?
Pleural thickening can develop for a number of reasons, including previous infections, inflammation or chest injuries. However, one of the most common causes is exposure to asbestos.
For many years, asbestos was widely used in industries such as construction, shipbuilding, engineering and manufacturing. Workers were often exposed to asbestos fibres while carrying out their duties, frequently without adequate protective equipment or being warned about the serious health risks associated with asbestos.
Common symptoms
Symptoms of pleural thickening may include:
- Shortness of breath, particularly during physical activity.
- Chest pain or discomfort.
- A persistent feeling of tightness in the chest.
- Reduced lung capacity.
- Difficulty carrying out everyday tasks due to breathlessness.
These symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen over time.
How is pleural thickening diagnosed?
Pleural thickening is usually diagnosed using chest X-rays or CT scans, together with a review of the individual’s medical and occupational history.
Asbestos-related conditions often have a long latency period, meaning symptoms may not develop until 20 to 40 years after the original exposure. As a result, many people are only diagnosed long after they have left the workplace where they were exposed to asbestos.
Can I claim asbestos compensation for pleural thickening?
If your pleural thickening was caused by asbestos exposure during the course of your employment, you may be entitled to bring an asbestos compensation claim.
The time limit for bringing an asbestos-related compensation claim is usually three years from your date of knowledge, rather than the date you were exposed to asbestos. In most cases, your date of knowledge is the date you are diagnosed with an asbestos-related condition, or the date you first become aware that your significant illness is likely to have been caused by asbestos exposure during the course of your employment.
Frequently asked questions about pleural thickeing
Is pleural thickening caused by asbestos?
Pleural thickening can have several causes, but diffuse pleural thickening is a recognised asbestos-related condition. Asbestos fibres can cause scarring of the pleura, the membrane surrounding the lungs, which may become thickened over time. RBHT NHS
Is pleural thickening the same as pleural plaques?
No. Pleural plaques are localised areas of thickening and usually do not affect breathing. Diffuse pleural thickening affects a larger area of the pleura and can restrict the lungs from expanding fully, which may cause breathlessness. RBHT NHS
Does pleural thickening get worse over time?
The effect of pleural thickening varies from person to person. Diffuse pleural thickening can restrict lung expansion and cause breathlessness. Anyone diagnosed with the condition should discuss their individual prognosis and any monitoring required with their medical team. HSE
Can I claim compensation for pleural thickening caused by asbestos?
You may be able to make a compensation claim if you have developed diffuse pleural thickening as a result of asbestos exposure caused by someone else’s negligence, including exposure during previous employment. Eligibility will depend on your individual circumstances. Diffuse pleural thickening is also recognised as an asbestos-related disease under the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit scheme. GOV.UK
Can I claim if the company I worked for no longer exists?
Potentially. The fact that a former employer has ceased trading does not necessarily mean that a claim cannot be pursued. A specialist asbestos solicitor can investigate the employment history and potential insurance arrangements.
