Meet the Team: Sarah Mellor

Our ‘Meet the Team’ articles aim to let you learn a little more about our staff, who are ultimately the foundations of Oliver & Co Solicitors. They also provide an insight into our excellent client feedback and reviews.

Sarah Mellor is a Private Client Solicitor and the Head of our Wills and Probate department. Sarah has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this area of law and assists clients daily in preparing Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, and Deputyship applications. She also manages a Probate caseload and helps her clients in obtaining a Grant of Probate when a loved one has passed away.

Suffering the loss of a loved one is heart breaking experience and has devastating effects on a person’s life. Sarah works hard to ensure that her clients are met with the empathy and kindness they so need. As such, we wanted to give you some insight into why Sarah chose Wills and Probate and what her role means to her.

Why did you want to be a Solicitor?

Whilst I was in school, I had the opportunity to partake in a week’s work experience and I chose to do this at a local Solicitor’s firm. It was such a busy and thriving environment that I immediately wanted to gain more information and an understanding as to what the staff members were doing and the purpose for doing it. This work experience encouraged me to research into the role of a Solicitor and speak with other people in the profession and was the subsequent reason why I then went on to do my Law Degree at Keele University.

What made you want to specialise in Wills and Probate?

I wanted to practice in an area of law which was heavily client focused and aimed at assisting people during a difficult time. I think that this really sums up the role of a Wills and Probate Solicitor perfectly. I get to know my clients and learn about their circumstances. I meet with my clients regularly and ensure that I build up a good rapport. I also take great satisfaction in knowing that I am helping people who are going through an emotional time, whether it be because they have lost a loved one or are trying to care for an elderly relative.

What areas of law did you train in?

I carried out my training contract in a small High Street firm and spent periods of my time in the Wills and Probate, Conveyancing, Commercial Property and Family departments. Although I enjoyed learning about other areas of law and have carried this knowledge along with me, I always knew that Wills & Probate was the department I wanted to specialise in.

How long have you been a part of the Oliver & Co team?

I joined Oliver & Co around four and a half years ago and have always worked in the Wills & Probate department. Each day provides for something different, and I am encouraged regularly to take part in volunteering and corporate networking.

What sets Oliver & Co apart from other firms?

I would say that our high level of customer service and client care definitely sets us apart from other firms in the area. I always set out to ensure that my clients fully understand the advice provided before leaving an appointment. I also endeavour to empathise with my clients and reassure them that I am available for appointments should they have any concerns or questions.

I recently helped clients with drafting Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, and this is what they had to say:

“We have had excellent service from Oliver and Co, where Sarah Mellor has helped us to review and rewrite our wills and set up our LPAs. Throughout the process she, and other members of staff, have been clear, helpful and efficient”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy walking and reading however, my main passion is going to the theatre. I have travelled all over the country to attend some amazing shows!
