What's going on at Oliver & Co

Meet the Team: Helena Cameron

Posted on September 15th 2020

Our ‘Meet the Team’ articles aim to let you learn more about our staff, who are the foundations of Oliver & Co and our excellent client feedback and reviews.

Helena Cameron has been part of the Oliver and Co family for nearly 14 years and she now heads up our Industrial Disease Claims Department. Helena and her team work hard to get their clients, many of whom are seriously ill, the compensation they deserve.

We asked Helena about her career choices and what she likes about working at Oliver & Co.

Why did you want to become a solicitor?

My cousin was a Criminal Solicitor and I saw the passion she had for her career and thought that, with my love for problem solving, it would be a good route for me.

Which areas of law did you train in?

I trained in Personal injury law mainly, but also spent some time doing Conveyancing and Wills and Probate.

Why did you want to specialise in Personal Injury law?

When I joined Oliver & Co, I was involved in dealing with accident claims but the Industrial Disease Department was becoming busier and I had the option of spreading my wings and so, for a while, I did both accident claims and industrial disease claims and, specifically, asbestos disease claims. I found it much more interesting and more in depth than the accident claims I had dealt with before. It was something I could really get my teeth into and helping those clients suffering with asbestos disease and their families, was extremely rewarding.

How long have you been part of the Oliver & Co team?

I joined Oliver & Co. in September 2006 and have not looked back. Much has changed over the years but there have also been a lot of constants, including many of the staff which I always think is a good sign that both as an employer and a firm, we are doing something right.

What have been some highlights of your time at Oliver & Co?

There have been many highlights, some work-related and some personal. Workwise, I have represented some lovely clients and families with whom I have built strong bonds which have lasted well beyond the conclusion of the claim. I have succeeded in cases which seemed hopeless at times and there is a special sense of achievement when that happens. On a more personal level, I have made lots of very good friends and enjoyed many a social activity with my colleagues – there are too many to mention!

What sets Oliver & Co apart?

There is a real sense of loyalty at Oliver & Co which I doubt exists in many firms. Many of our staff are long serving and that is testament to the ethos of the firm. We are always striving to improve things and are never afraid of change, unlike many firms who stick with the old. Our commitment to customer service is second to none and it is not just because we have to provide good service, we all genuinely enjoy doing so.

Oliver & Co prides themselves on great customer service. Can you describe a time you received amazing customer service?

I can think of lots of times – I can also think of lots of times when I did not receive amazing customer service! I always make sure I praise good service as much as I complain about bad service because often it’s easier to complain.

If you hadn’t become a solicitor, what would you have done?

I have a very varied list, ranging from an accountant, to a naval officer and a teacher!

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love spending time with my family and friends, travelling and I am part of a military fitness group. We exercise outside which is great after a day in the office!
