I’m proud to work for an employee owned law firm

A blog by Claire Critchlow – Family Law Solicitor

Claire Critchlow started her career with Oliver & Co Solicitors almost six years ago as a Paralegal. She has since completed her Training Contract with Oliver & Co and is now a Solicitor in the firm’s Family team. She shares what Oliver & Co’s transition to employee ownership means to her.

The Oliver & Co ethos is incredibly supportive. I’ve always been encouraged to progress in my career, and I’ve been supported by my colleagues at every step of the way. When I heard we were becoming employee owned I felt excited, and the more I find out about employee ownership, I am certain that it is the perfect next step for the firm.

I think it is brilliant that David and Kay, who owned the firm, have decided to sell the business to the employees. It means that when they retire in due course, the amazing culture they’ve created and the hard work we have all put in will be preserved and built upon.

I love that employee ownership means that everyone’s contribution is valued, no matter what their role is, and we will all enjoy an equal share of our profits. That is incredibly motivating. We only became employee owned in October, so it was a huge surprise to learn that everyone is getting a profit share payment before Christmas. With the expense of Christmas, and prices of everything going up, we are all delighted!

I think some people may be surprised that a law firm has taken this step, as stereotypically, some think of law firms as very hierarchical, old-fashioned organisations. I’m so proud that we are the largest law firm in the North West to become employee owned. I’ve had friends from other law firms around the country getting in touch with me to find out more about what it is all about after they saw the news covered in the legal press.

Although it is early days in our employee ownership journey, I have already seen that everyone is being asked for their ideas and input on key business decisions more often, for example, we all had a chance to put forward our suggestions for new signage for the office.

I am excited to find out what the future holds for us as an employee-owned business – and I am looking forward to being part of it all.
