A Mesothelioma Diagnosis Decades After Asbestos Exposure
Like many people diagnosed with mesothelioma, our client’s exposure to asbestos had taken place many years before he became unwell.
He received his diagnosis while on holiday in 2025, having previously worked as a lagger and metal cladder in the insulation industry during the 1970s.
Although much of his work involved installing insulation, he was also regularly required to remove old asbestos lagging from pipework in industrial and commercial buildings. This work generated significant amounts of airborne asbestos dust, often in confined spaces where there was little or no ventilation.
Unsafe Working Conditions
Our investigations found that our client had been exposed to asbestos dust over an extended period while working for two separate insulation contractors.
His duties included removing deteriorating asbestos insulation, cleaning contaminated pipework and sweeping asbestos debris from work areas. These activities released large quantities of asbestos fibres into the air, which he inhaled throughout the working day.
Although some protective equipment was provided, it fell well below modern safety standards. There was no effective respiratory protection, no face-fit testing and no adequate warning about the long-term dangers of asbestos exposure.
Sadly, these were working conditions experienced by many insulation workers during that era.
