Mesothelioma Compensation After Secondary Asbestos Exposure

A diagnosis of mesothelioma is life-changing. For many families, it comes as a complete shock, particularly when the person diagnosed has never worked directly with asbestos.

At Oliver & Co Solicitors, we recently helped a client secure compensation after she developed mesothelioma following secondary asbestos exposure during childhood. Her case highlights an important fact that many people are unaware of – asbestos exposure in the home can be just as devastating as exposure in the workplace.

How Secondary Asbestos Exposure Happened

Our client had never worked with asbestos herself.

Instead, she was exposed as a young child through her father’s work clothes. During the 1960s, he worked as a carpenter, regularly cutting and fitting asbestos insulation boards without any respiratory protection or warnings about the dangers of asbestos.

Each day, he returned home covered in asbestos dust. Like many families at the time, contaminated work clothes were brought into the family home, where asbestos fibres were released into the air during everyday activities such as changing clothes and washing them by hand.

Sadly, this type of secondary asbestos exposure, sometimes referred to as domestic asbestos exposure, has led to many mesothelioma diagnoses decades later.

A Devastating Diagnosis

After experiencing breathing difficulties and undergoing a series of hospital investigations, our client was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in 2025.

The diagnosis was especially heartbreaking because her father had also died from mesothelioma several years earlier.

She underwent major surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible, followed by an intensive course of chemotherapy. The treatment was physically demanding and had a significant impact on her everyday life, preventing her from working and enjoying the outdoor activities she had always loved.

Why Choosing a Specialist Mesothelioma Solicitor Matters

Mesothelioma claims require specialist knowledge and careful investigation.

Our role was to trace the source of the asbestos exposure, gather evidence from events that had taken place decades earlier, and secure financial compensation while our client focused on her treatment and recovery.

Above all, we aimed to make the legal process as straightforward as possible during an incredibly difficult time.

Reflecting on her experience, she said:

“I didn’t want to spend time comparing solicitors or dealing with paperwork. I just wanted someone I could trust. Knowing Oliver & Co already understood our family’s history made everything feel much less overwhelming.”

Looking to the Future

Following surgery and chemotherapy, she received the wonderful news that there was no evidence of active mesothelioma on her latest scan.

Although mesothelioma remains a serious illness that requires ongoing monitoring, the compensation secured has provided financial security and peace of mind for the future.

As she explained:

“The settlement means that if the disease ever returns, we know we’ll be able to access the best care available. That gives us enormous reassurance.”

Her journey is also a reminder that advances in treatment are giving many people renewed hope. While every diagnosis is different, improvements in specialist care mean that more patients are achieving positive outcomes than ever before.
