The Joshua Tree is a remarkable, locally-founded charity that supports families across the North West of England and North Wales who are affected by childhood cancer. With dedicated centres in Sandiway and a newly opened hub in Colwyn Bay, the charity offers a vital lifeline to families during and after one of the most distressing experiences imaginable.
Why The Joshua Tree?
What sets The Joshua Tree apart is its holistic and family-focused approach. Unlike many cancer support services that focus only on the patient, The Joshua Tree recognises that childhood cancer affects the entire family—from siblings and parents to extended relatives and caregivers.
The charity provides tailored, practical, and emotional support during diagnosis, treatment, and beyond. Their support programmes are guided by the unique needs of each family, helping them navigate the upheaval of hospital appointments, prolonged treatments, and the emotional toll of a cancer diagnosis.
Key services include:
- Emotional Wellbeing Support – Access to counselling and therapeutic services for children, parents, and siblings to help manage the emotional impact of diagnosis and treatment.
- Educational Support – Helping children reintegrate into school life, including tutoring and communication with educational providers to ensure academic needs are met.
- Wellbeing Activities – Art, music, play therapy, and community events help families to stay connected, rediscover joy, and build resilience through shared experiences.
- Practical Help – From assistance with hospital travel and accommodation to guidance on financial aid and welfare entitlements, The Joshua Tree ensures no family feels alone or overwhelmed.
Their centres also act as safe spaces, where families can spend quality time together away from clinical settings, talk openly with trained staff and peers, and simply breathe.
Built by the Community, For the Community
The Joshua Tree’s main support centre in Sandiway was built almost entirely through local donations, fundraising, and the generosity of local tradespeople. This spirit of community is something that deeply resonates with us at Oliver & Co. As a firm rooted in Chester for 64 years so far, we are inspired by what the charity has achieved and the lives it continues to touch.
Oliver & Co’s Year of Fundraising
Our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Committee has exciting plans for the year ahead. From bake sales and sponsored running to quiz nights and team challenges, we’ll be running a calendar of events aimed at raising funds and awareness for The Joshua Tree. Every penny raised will go towards extending their services, reaching more families, and ensuring no child or parent faces cancer alone.
We’re also looking forward to volunteering with the charity wherever possible—whether it’s lending our time to events, providing pro bono legal support, or simply offering a listening ear.
