Oliver & Co Sponsor Professor of Respiratory Medicine Who Went the Extra Mile for Mesothelioma UK

We are thrilled to have sponsored Professor Nick Maskell, a Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Bristol University and Consultant Pleural Physician at North Bristol NHS Trust, in his mission to raise awareness and funds for Mesothelioma UK.

On 27th April Professor Maskell successfully completed an impressive feat: cycling 105 miles and climbing 2.5km of vertical height. This achievement is even more remarkable given that he was recovering from a fractured wrist sustained during training five weeks prior. Nick, a friend of Oliver & Co Solicitors, participated in the Mallorca 312, a challenging event with over 8,000 participants, which involved cycling over the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range along the northern part of the island.

Nick’s incredible effort raised over £26,000 for Mesothelioma UK, a charity dedicated to supporting patients and carers affected by mesothelioma. Everyone at Oliver & Co Solicitors is immensely proud of Nick’s accomplishment and delighted to have contributed £2,000 to the cause.

Upon completing the challenge, Nick said, “Thank goodness that challenge is ticked off the bucket list! My challenge was made much harder because of the recent wrist fracture, and the next day my arm ached more than my legs! Thank you Oliver & Co for sponsoring a spot on my racing jersey.”

Well done, Nick! Your determination and stamina are truly inspiring. This incredible achievement is a testament to your hard work and dedication.

What is Mesothelioma and What Does Mesothelioma UK Do?

Mesothelioma is a rare and incurable form of cancer that typically affects the lining of the lungs but can also impact the lining of the stomach and other organs. This disease develops gradually over time, usually more than 20 years after the initial exposure to asbestos, which is the cause in 9 out of 10 diagnosed cases. Tiny asbestos fibres can become lodged in the lungs, causing damage that eventually leads to mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma UK is a dedicated charity providing support to those diagnosed with mesothelioma across the UK. They have a network of clinical nurse specialists offering the best possible care and support. Additionally, they have established local support groups nationwide to assist patients, their families, and carers, ensuring they have the help they need during difficult times.

We were glad we could sponsor Professor Maskell and know the money will greatly support those battling mesothelioma.
