Each year, communities across the UK come together to raise awareness about one of the most pervasive yet often overlooked environmental issues—noise pollution. Noise Action Week, will span the 19th to the 23rd May 2025 and is a national initiative that highlights the impact of unwanted sound on health, wellbeing, and community harmony.
What Is Noise Action Week?
Established by Environmental Protection UK, Noise Action Week is a platform for local authorities, housing associations, schools, and community groups to engage the public in discussions about noise-related problems. The campaign emphasizes the importance of managing noise, whether it’s booming bass from a neighbour’s party, barking dogs, excessive noise exposure at work or the relentless rumble of traffic.
Why Noise Matters
Noise isn’t just an annoyance—it’s a public health issue. Studies by the World Health Organisation have shown that prolonged exposure to high levels of noise can lead to stress, sleep disturbance, cardiovascular disease, and reduced productivity. Even moderate noise can disrupt learning and negatively impact mental health.
Exposure to excessive noise without adequate hearing protection being worn can lead to debilitating hearing loss and tinnitus symptoms which affects so many of our clients.
In urban environments, noise is a daily challenge. For residents, especially those living in shared buildings or near busy roads, the effects can accumulate over time. Noise Action Week encourages everyone to take stock of how they contribute to the soundscape—and how they can help reduce its negative impacts, for example, by wearing hearing protection and being conscious of others around you.
What Happens During the Week?
Noise Action Week features a range of activities, including:
- Workshops and seminars on noise control, soundproofing, and respectful neighbour behaviour.
- Public information campaigns to educate residents about acceptable noise levels and how to report issues.
- School projects that teach young people about the science of sound and the importance of noise awareness.
- Collaborations with housing associations to address persistent noise complaints in residential areas.
These efforts aim to not just highlight problems, but also to promote practical solutions, from using quieter lawn equipment to planning community quiet hours.
How You Can Get Involved
Whether you’re an individual, a tenant association, or a council officer, there are many ways to take part in Noise Action Week:
- Host a community event to open dialogue about local noise issues.
- Share tips on reducing everyday noise—like turning down TV volumes or maintaining car exhaust systems.
- Encourage young people to explore how sound affects their environment through creative projects.
- Promote respectful behaviour in shared spaces such as apartment blocks or workplaces.
- Encourage the use of hearing protection in loud work or social settings.
Noise Action Week is also a great opportunity for local authorities to showcase their efforts to manage noise complaints and improve the acoustic environment.
Noise Action Week is a timely reminder that a quieter world is a healthier one. By turning down the volume, we not only protect our ears but also foster stronger, more considerate communities.
