Initial Symptoms and Investigation
Our client initially sought medical help after experiencing troubling urinary symptoms, including haematuria. She underwent a CT scan to investigate the cause but did not receive a follow-up appointment. Believing that no news meant good news, she assumed everything was fine and continued with her life, unaware of the critical information missed by the hospital.
Over a Year Later
Fourteen months later, our client began to experience significant weight loss and became anaemic. Her GP referred her to the hospital with concerns about a possible cancer diagnosis. Following further investigations, including a colonoscopy, she was tragically diagnosed with carcinoma of the caecum. Shockingly, it was revealed that her earlier CT scan had shown significant abnormalities, which had been overlooked and left unaddressed.
Acknowledgement of Failings
The hospital later admitted that they had breached their duty of care by failing to act on the findings from the initial CT scan. They accepted responsibility for the avoidable progression of our client’s cancer, which ultimately proved to be terminal. Despite the family’s heartbreak, they were able to obtain some justice through a settlement. The hospital agreed to compensate them £10,000, which reflected our client’s avoidable pain and suffering, and helped cover her funeral costs.
