He was employed full-time as a moulder at Cape Universal Building Products Limited (later known as Plumefern Limited) on Talbots Lane, Watford. During this time there, spanning six to twelve months, he was exposed to significant asbestos hazards.
Mr. B’s Exposure at Cape Universal
Cape Universal manufactured various asbestos products, including heated flue pipes, gutters, terminals, and roofing materials. These were made by mixing raw asbestos powder with water to create a paste that was poured into moulds and then dried to set.
Mr. B worked in the middle of the factory on the production line, where there was no ventilation – only sealed skylights. He was constantly surrounded by raw asbestos powder being fed into machines and although he focused on his duties wet-moulding products, he worked just a short distance from these machines.
Adding to the risk, Mr. B worked about 15 feet from employees sanding down dried asbestos fittings and pipes using abrasive hand tools. This process generated large amounts of asbestos dust that filled the air, settling on his clothing, hair, and skin. He described the environment as thick with fibrous dust particles that lingered in the air before settling on surfaces.
No Protection Provided
Despite daily exposure to airborne asbestos dust, Mr. B was never warned about the dangers of asbestos or given respiratory protection. This negligence by his employer was central to his case.
Compensation Secured
