HMRC Work History: A Crucial Piece of the Puzzle
Initially, Mr. C was uncertain about when and where he had been exposed to airborne asbestos dust during his working life. To assist in his case, we obtained his HMRC work history from the Inland Revenue, detailing all his employers since 1960/61.
One of the employers listed was Dawson & Henderson Limited, where Mr. C worked as a bricklayer and labourer for around six months during the 1978/79 tax year. In his witness statement, Mr. C recalled working on various old buildings across the Gosport, where he was involved in constructing brick structures around manholes and sweeping up inside the buildings at Gosport Naval Base. He vividly remembered seeing extensive asbestos lagging on pipework throughout the buildings. The material was old, fibrous, and flaking off, leaving asbesots dust and debris on the floor.
The Hidden Danger of Sweeping
Mr. C was responsible for sweeping up the dust and debris that covered the base’s floor. As he did so, he couldn’t avoid inhaling the large clouds of asbestos dust stirred up by his dry sweeping.
During his time at Dawson & Henderson, Mr. C was never warned about the dangers of asbestos nor was he provided with any respiratory protection, which supported his claim for mesothelioma compensation.
DMPS: A Lifeline
Unfortunately, Dawson & Henderson is no longer in business, and no insurance could be found for the company. Despite this, we helped Mr. C claim a significant amount of compensation through the Diffuse Mesothelioma Payments Scheme.
This case highlights that even when mesothelioma sufferers struggle to recall specific instances of asbestos exposure, their memories can be jogged with a complete list of past employers from their HMRC work histories.
