Our client suffered from diabetes which caused him to suffer arterial problems with his right foot.
He was under the care of the vascular team at the Defendant Trust but their failure to act on his problems resulted in an accelerated below knee amputation.
Treatment
Our client was initially admitted to hospital with a gangrenous right second toe for which he underwent angioplasty and amputation of the toe which was entirely reasonable.
Unfortunately, our client’s health continued to deteriorate such that further toes had to be amputated.
The hospital failed to manage our client’s arterial disease in his right foot and failed to undertake repeat investigations to identify that the angioplasty had failed.
As such, our client suffered repeated infections and the need for debridement of his foot, a full foot amputation and eventually a below knee amputation.
Expert Evidence
Our expert vascular surgeon was of the view that had investigations in respect of our client’s arterial disease been undertaken sooner, it would have been identified that the angioplasty had failed and repeat angioplasty would have been undertaken.
Due to the disease itself, our client would have eventually come to below knee amputation in any event, but he would have avoided a significant period of pain and repeated surgeries and debridements, and the amputation would have been delayed but for the negligence.
Liability Not Admitted
At no stage did the Defendant admit liability but we continued to fight for our client and achieved a successful outcome for them, with compensation in the sum of £45,000.00 being achieved.
