Hospital Medication Error

In October 2022 our client suffered a stroke and was taken to Hospital for treatment, he suffered another stroke shortly after being admitted to hospital which resulted in extensive brain damage, left sided weakness, difficulty swallowing and the inability to retain information. Doctors advised his family that he would have a long rehabilitation journey ahead.

Our client remained in hospital for rehabilitation treatment and received medication for his illness.

Two days before Christmas, our client’s medication was abruptly stopped for a period of five days and his condition deteriorated. He remained in hospital for several months but was unable to recover to the level he was at prior to the medication omission.

An investigation into our client’s care during this period sited insufficient and inexperienced staff, communication errors and leadership issues to be the cause of the medication omission.

Following the medication omission our client also developed two Grade III pressure sores.

Our client was unable to recover during his admission and sadly passed away in April 2023 at the age of 75. Oliver & Co were instructed by his daughter in August 2023.

The decision was made to send an early letter of claim so that we could progress the claim at a quicker pace and narrow out any points of dispute in a timely manner.

An offer of £7,500 was made by the Defendant, we believed this was reasonable however, we entered into informal settlement negotiations with the Defendant successfully increased the settlement value to £8,000, meaning we were able to bring the case to conclusion six months after instruction.
