Our client had recently lost her father, who was living abroad. The deceased held bank accounts and other assets in the UK and abroad. We were able to assist our client in obtaining the Death Certificate from abroad to be able to commence the administration of the estate. We were then able to put together the inheritance tax return in the United Kingdom and commence proceedings in the foreign jurisdiction to locate any assets in that jurisdiction.
In addition, our client and the other beneficiaries of the will wished to vary the will of their late father so as to leave the estate more equally between the various family members. We were able to prepare a Deed of Variation, varying the will of her late father and passing on the inheritance in a way that met the needs of various family members.
How we can help
We can assist clients to navigate the complexities when a family member dies in a foreign jurisdiction. We can also speak with the various beneficiaries and if everyone is in agreement it is possible to vary the will to leave the estate in a way that is more beneficial from an inheritance point of view or that reflects a change in circumstances.
