£550,000 Settlement Secured After Negligent Spinal Surgery

We recently achieved a substantial settlement for our client who suffered life-changing injuries following negligent spinal surgery.

Surgery and Complications

Our client underwent an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedure with a titanium cage. Unfortunately, following the operation, she developed serious neurological problems, including right-sided weakness in both her arm and leg and an inability to walk.

An emergency MRI scan revealed a post-operative haematoma at spinal level C5/6, causing compression of the spinal cord.

Further Emergency Surgery

She required urgent re-operation to evacuate the haematoma and extend the discectomy. Although this provided some improvement, particularly to her right side, she was sadly left with permanent and significant disabilities.

Allegations of Negligence

On our client’s behalf, we alleged that:

  • The initial surgeon failed to fully remove disc material at C5/6.
  • The spinal cord was not adequately decompressed.
  • There was a delay in re-operating to relieve the cord compression.

These failings led to permanent spinal injury and lasting disability.

Liability Admitted

The Defendant admitted liability for the negligent surgery. We then worked closely with a team of experts, including a Consultant Neurologist and a Care Consultant, to fully assess the extent of her injuries and long-term care needs.

Outcome: Life-Changing Compensation

The case concluded with a settlement of £550,000, providing our client with financial security, access to specialist care, and the means to improve her quality of life.
