Allison Pepper, a solicitor in our personal injury department who has specialist knowledge of amputee cases recently settled a case for a young male amputee for £3 million.
Our client was a passenger in the Defendant’s vehicle who lost control at high-speed causing the vehicle to roll. Our client’s arm was unfortunately placed out of the window when the vehicle rolled, and our client suffered significant tissue damage. Despite best efforts by the surgeons, it was impossible for the limb to be saved. Our client underwent an emergency operation to amputate his arm above the elbow.
Our client had previously been an extremely competitive off-road cyclist and competed in several competitions. Our client had also worked in a manual role. Unbelievably our client was able to return to work only one month after the accident, whereupon his job role was modified to allow him to continue working. After returning to work for a significant period he found working full time was more than he could handle, and he changed his position in the firm.
We were able to secure state of the art replacement prosthetic limbs early on for our client by way of interim payments and before medical reports were obtained. We also secured fitting costs and ensured our client was trained how to use them correctly to ensure maximum functionality. The amount of money our client received included the cost of prosthetics throughout his life. In addition, we secured funding for a gym arm and a cycling arm, both of which were obtained for his lifetime. A claim was made for future care and assistance in terms of gardening and heavier DIY tasks, adaptations to his home, additional vehicle and holiday costs.
Allison successfully brought the claim to a conclusion within 18 months which is unusual in these types of cases and court proceedings were not necessary.
