Action Mesothelioma Day 2025 is observed annually on the first Friday of July. This important day brings people together to raise awareness about mesothelioma, support vital research into better treatments, and remember all those whose lives have been impacted by this devastating disease.
What is mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer caused almost exclusively by exposure to asbestos. It affects the mesothelial cells that form the protective lining of several internal organs, most commonly the lungs (pleural mesothelioma), the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), the heart (pericardial mesothelioma) or testes (testicular mesothelioma).
Mesothelioma is primarily caused by the inhalation or ingestion of airborne asbestos fibres, which usually occurs during an individual’s working or domestic life. It is a disease that is notorious for its long latency period between asbestos exposure and experiencing symptoms of the disease, which is usually between 10 to 50 years. Due to this delay and the number of years the illness lies dormant for, by the time mesothelioma is diagnosed, the prognosis is often poor.
It is notoriously a difficult disease to diagnose and treat, leading to a high mortality rate. In the UK, approximately 2,700 new cases are diagnosed each year, with projections indicating that this number could persist into the 2040s.
Go Blue for Meso
To mark Action Mesothelioma Day, the ‘Go Blue for Meso’ campaign encourages individuals and organisations to wear blue and illuminate landmarks in blue light. This initiative helps draw national attention to mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos.
Despite the asbestos ban over two decades ago, we continue to regularly hear from individuals who have experienced recent exposure to asbestos, highlighting the lingering danger it still poses to our society. It is only through awareness and education that we can ensure a future free of mesothelioma and the suffering it causes.
At Oliver and Co, we were proud to participate in Action Mesothelioma Day. Our team wore blue and hosted a Blue Light Walk in honour of our clients and their families who have been affected by this cruel disease. We also organised well known features of Chester to be lit in Blue to raise awareness! Too many of our clients, past and present, have experienced the devastating impact of mesothelioma, and they remain at the heart of our work. We will remember them and continue to secure justice for those exposed to asbestos through no fault of their own.
If you would like to take part next year, you can join a Blue Light Walk near you by visiting – Action Mesothelioma Day 2025 – Blue Light Walk | Mesothelioma UK.
Action Mesothelioma Day is not only a day of remembrance, it’s a call to action. While it is crucial to reflect on the progress made, the fight is far from over. Asbestos remains present in many buildings across the UK, and mesothelioma continues to claim lives. By supporting Action Mesothelioma Day, we can help raise vital funds for research, amplify the voices of those affected and move one step closer to a future without this devastating disease.
