Headway – The Brain Injury Association created the Action for Brain Injury Week, which is an annual platform to raise awareness for people with brain injuries and how it can affect their lives.
This week is ‘Action for Brain Injury Week’, and Headway have launched their ‘a life re-written’ campaign this year to raise awareness of the ‘identity’ of those who have suffered a brain injury. Headway have encouraged individuals to share their stories about their journeys following a devastating life event.
The stories being showcased throughout the week highlight that no two brain injuries are the same and no two experiences reflect the same journey. The campaign aims to challenge the misconceptions surrounding injuries and educate people about the complications involved when recovering from such a life-changing event.
How social media has raised awareness:
Javeno Mclean, a content creator, personal trainer and owner of the gym j7healthcentre, has dedicated his life and gym to rehabilitating those who have suffered from or are born with brain injuries and other disabilities.
He posts videos of those who are affected by strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhages, cerebral palsy, brain tumours, aneurysms etc. He uses motivation, energy and a positive attitude to get his clients into believing they can do the impossible, whilst also acknowledging that life with these disabilities is difficult.
One of his young clients has a severe brain tumour, which has seriously affected their mobility. As we follow their story, we can see the progression they have overcome with Javeno over the time they have spent training with him. They have a great determination to get back what they have lost, but also adapt to the reality of their situation now and Javeno is there every step of the way to help, train and encourage.
In the spirit of Headway’s ‘a life re-written’ theme, we can learn from stories shared in the media. We can educate ourselves on how to care/help those who may be too vulnerable to do so themselves. All it takes is perseverance and motivation to change somebody’s outlook on their circumstances.
How Oliver & Co can help
Our specialist medical negligence team have vast experience in dealing with cases of negligence that have resulted in many different types of brain injury.
We can help you claim compensation for:
- Failure or delay in diagnosing subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Failure or delay in diagnosing strokes
- Delay or failure in diagnosing aneurysms (widened blood vessels)
- Failure or delay in diagnosing tumours
- Surgical errors leading to brain injury
- Anaesthetic errors leading to brain injury
- Failure to diagnose and treat infection e.g. meningitis
- Blocked shunts leading to hydrocephalus
We have secured millions of pounds in compensation for clients, allowing them to move on with their lives and regain as much independence as possible.
Case study:
Our medical negligence solicitors represented a 31-year-old woman who, despite persistent severe headaches and nausea, was told her brain scans were normal and received no follow-up care. Tragically, three years later, just two days after giving birth, she collapsed due to a subarachnoid haemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm, leaving her paralysed on her left side and permanently disabled. Our experts found that at least one aneurysm was visible on the earlier scans, and had it been correctly diagnosed and treatment, the rupture and subsequent haemorrhage could have been prevented. Liability was resolved in her favour, resulting in a £2 million compensation award.
