What's going on at Oliver & Co

Round up of 2019- Oliver & Co Solicitors

Posted on December 18th 2019

As this year draws to a close, we have been reminiscing about all the exciting events and achievements that have happened at Oliver & Co in 2019.  From award evenings to joining forces with a local law firm, it’s fair to say that this year has been nothing short of busy!

We started the year off on the right note, with local band Eskimo Spies performing their first charity gig of the year, led by our Industrial Disease Solicitor James Cameron. The gig was a sell out and we were delighted to raise over £2000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. It was such a success that we organised a second gig in November, again raising a further £1026.

In March, we were delighted to be a main sponsor of AmaSing’s event at the Storyhouse, where 34 primary schools from Chester and Ellesmere Port performed across three nights. Following the huge success of this event, we are proud to be a main sponsor for their new and exciting event Fusion, that will take place in Chester in April 2020.

As Spring came into season, we announced our chosen charity of the year – the West Cheshire Foodbank. Throughout the year, members of staff donated over 140kg of items and in October, we were delighted to present a cheque to the team that was used to provide a defibrillator for the warehouse facility, should anyone working there or in nearby buildings need one in an emergency.

We were delighted to welcome Jane West, Commercial Property Solicitor, to our team in May 2019. With over 25 years’ experience working in property law, Jane deals with a wide range of commercial property transactions. Jane heads our commercial property department and provides a no-nonsense, efficient and professional service to clients.

Over the months we have had our fair share of cake sales, where employees have put their baking skills to the test to raise money for charities.  Towards the end of May, our Industrial Disease team put on a magnificent spread of sweet treats, in aid of Mesothelioma UK.

Each month throughout 2019, we took part in Chester’s Dee 106.3 Legal Hour, where one of our Solicitors chats to show host Gavin Matthews, answering questions on a variety of interesting legal topics such as Pensions and Divorce, Asbestos Disease, Vicarious Liability and the Non-For-Profit Sector. In July, Road Traffic Accident Solicitor Allison Pepper featured on the show and discussed important issues relating to personal injury claims.

We were delighted that Trainee Solicitors Charlotte Owens and Claire Critchlow passed their Legal Practice Course (LPC) in July. They both achieved distinctions and are now one step closer to becoming fully fledged Solicitors.

As a Chester based firm, we are proud to support our local hospice, the Hospice of the Good Shepherd. Their Foamtastic Colourblast is an iconic event for the hospice and we were thrilled to be the main sponsor for the event held this year in September. Many of our members of staff volunteered at paint stations along the route and our very own Clinical Negligence Solicitor Martyn Elliot took part in the race.

The autumn and winter have been a time of acknowledgements and accreditations for Oliver & Co. Rhiannon White, Family Solicitor was awarded the Family Law Accreditation by the Law Society, and James Cameron, Industrial Disease Solicitor was accepted as a Senior Litigator of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL). Congratulation to both for your hard work and significant achievements.

The Cheshire Business Awards took place on the 4th October and we were delighted to be a finalist for the Corporate Social Responsibility Award. We are very passionate about ethical and sustainable business practices and have tried to make a positive impact in the local community. We are proud that our commitment to being a socially responsible business has been acknowledged.

In October 2019, we were delighted to join forces with Ellis & Co Solicitors. Ellis & Co are an established and well respected local firm of Solicitors. In addition to having a loyal client base, they pride themselves on being very friendly and approachable. A welcome party for the team took place at our office on the 25th October and employees of Oliver and Co are thrilled to work with a team that have similar core values on providing high quality legal services to the community.

The high level of service we provide to our clients is very important to us. In November, our great customer service was recognised in the 2019 CH1 Chester BID Customer Service Awards. We were one of 42 businesses in the Professional Services category, and through a public vote were nominated in the top three.

To end the year and the season of good will, staff members collected items to be donated to our furry friends in need this Christmas in aid of Harvey’s Army. Treats and toys were contributed and on 11th December they were picked up by a local volunteer.

2019 has been an eventful yet rewarding year for Oliver & Co. We are looking forward to more hard work and fun in 2020. We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
