Welcome to Ellis & Co Solicitors

We are a small team of solicitors who joined forces with Oliver & Co Solicitors in 2019. We specialise in private client legal services. Our service is founded on clear communication, approach-ability and integrity.

Conveyancing is the mainstay of our services. We also specialise in Wills & Probate, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection, Deputyship, Compromise Agreements, Matrimonial/Divorce work and Commercial Leases (see below for more information).

The History of Ellis & Co Solicitors

In 1967 the firm of Lightens was established in Chester and Deeside, by Neil Lighten. It was subsequently re-named to Ellis & Co. in 1993, when Jim Ellis took over as the senior partner of the firm. He was later joined by Sarah Brown. In September 2014, the firm became a limited company known as Ellis and Co Solicitors Ltd, but we continue trading as Ellis and Co.

Originally practising in Grosvenor Street, we moved to offices in Castle Street, Chester in 1993. During 1995, the firm took on a branch office in Buckley, incorporating another firm in the process. In 2005, we made the decision to consolidate the firm, closing our branch office and moving the staff to Chester, so that we were all under one roof.

Today we are part of Oliver & Co Solicitors and we all reside in a beautiful Victorian office building in Chester city centre.

 Legal Services

Ellis & Co has a long history of legal services. The great majority of our work comes from repeat clients or personal recommendations. We offer the following legal services:

Residential Conveyancing and Property Matters

We have a dedicated team of conveyancing solicitors who have a wealth of experience between them and we also have a ‘state of the art’ case management system, which will ensure the smoothest ride possible. We strive to balance traditional values and methods of communication with cutting edge IT and technology, so we are very happy to accommodate those who are less computer literate and prefer a more personal touch as well as those who prefer a primarily digital approach. We cover most aspects of land law, from buying and selling homes and remortgaging, to fixing lost deeds issues and dealing with complex problems with your deeds.

Wills, Probate and Loss of a Loved One

The legal process is the last thing you want to think about at such a difficult time but when you are ready, our dedicated and highly experienced Probate, Wills and Trusts Department, headed up by Rachel Burke who is a fully qualified member of STEP (the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners) will do all they can to help. Our specialists will also be able to guide you through the Will making process, and advise you on ancillary matters like inheritance tax and the mitigation of claims against your estate.

Matrimonial and Divorce Matters

Matrimonial/Divorce work is dealt with by Jim Ellis, who has 35 years’ experience in this kind of work. He is assisted by trainee solicitor Emma Bateman who graduated from Chester University 2 years ago with a first class law degree and from the University of Law with distinctions a plenty.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Lasting Powers Of Attorney work is dealt with by all 3 qualified solicitors in the practice, as well as our trainee solicitor Emma Bateman, our paralegal Amelia Fearn and our 2 main secretarial assistants Sheena Griffiths (who is the longest serving member of the support team with 30 years’ experience under her belt) and Joanne Scott who has been with us off and on for 12/15 years.

Deputyships and Court of Protection

Again, all 3 qualified solicitors in the practice have experience in this area of work but Sarah Brown is the main specialist and is available to act as Deputy where no family members are available.

Compromise / Settlement Agreements and Commercial Leases

Jim Ellis is our specialist here and he also does some charity work.
