Charity begins at work …
Posted on April 30th 2019
Oliver & Co’s chosen charity for this year is the West Cheshire Foodbank and today a number of us visited the charity headquarters to see for ourselves the amazing work they do in our local area.
West Cheshire Foodbank provides emergency food to people in crisis. Non-perishable, in-date food is donated by schools, churches, businesses and individuals through community collection box schemes and through supermarket collections at Tesco’s stores in the local area.
In the last year, there has been a 22 per cent increase in the number of emergency food parcels given to local people. Between April 2018 and March 2019, West Cheshire Foodbank helped 9651 people and of these recipients, a staggering 3552 – more than a third – were children.
During our visit we saw the donated food being checked and sorted and we learnt how it is distributed to centres throughout the Chester, Ellesmere Port and Neston areas ready to give to local people in need.
David Owen, Managing Director of Oliver & Co said “In this day and age it seems shocking that so many people in our local area face going hungry. We are delighted to be supporting this charity that provides such an essential lifeline to people at times of crisis.
We were hugely inspired by the work of the West Cheshire Foodbank and have come away full of ideas of ways we can help, including volunteering at the Tesco’s Supermarket collection day in June, raising awareness of the great work that the Foodbank does, donating money raised from our office ‘dress down days’ and setting up a food collection point at the office.”
If you have any items you would like to donate, you can bring them into our office on Foregate Street, Chester. For a list of needed items please visit the Foodbank’s website
