England Legend Paul Gascoigne Charged With Drink Driving

On February 8th former England star Paul Gascoigne was arrested by Police in North Yorkshire on suspicion of being in charge of a motor vehicle while unfit through drink. He was taken into custody after a disturbance at a takeaway in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire.

The 42 year old footballing legend was questioned by Police along with another man who had also been arrested.

In March he was charged with drink driving, driving without a Licence and without Insurance. The other man arrested with him faces similar charges including driving whilst disqualified and without insurance.

Gascoigne has fought a long battle against alcoholism & depression having been sectioned three times under the Mental Health Act in 2008.

Having played for Newcastle, Spurs, Lazio, Everton, Glasgow Rangers, Middlesborough and in China all football fans will hope that this does not represent or, cause a further downturn in his health.

Comment Frank Rogers, a member of Oliver & Co’s specialist Motoring Prosecution Team said:

“For Paul to be convicted there will need to be evidence that he had been driving a vehicle while unfit to do so due to drink. The other charges suggest that he did not, for whatever reason, possess a valid Licence at the time. If convicted he will face a driving ban and depending on his alcohol reading could be made the subject of a Community order. This could take a number of forms including Alcohol Awareness Courses: successfully completing such a Course could see his ban reduced by one quarter.

Whatever happens, as someone who loved to see him play for England at his best, we hope that he conquers his health problems and finds some meaningful way of inspiring youngsters to become sporting stars, just as he did.”
